Once Upon a Time in September . . .

Once upon a time there was a little blog.

A very little blog.

The writing was simple, full of pop culture references, and frequent over/misuse of punctuation.

But in all other aspects the blog skipped along quite happily. New posts appeared every 5-10 days and usually contained silly stories accompanied by cute photos to illustrate. Over time the posts became shorter and less frequent. When a new post appeared it was evident by the lack of writing (and editing of that writing) and random smattering of iPhone photos that the blog had quit trying so hard.

And then time came when weeks, and then months would go by with no updates. The blog was all but forgotten . . . isolated . . . adrift . . . all alone in the vast universe of The Internet.

Dear the 6 people who read this blog -

This is the story of this blog. Shocking, but true. But do not despair - for while I cannot promise you quippy and intelligent writing, I can offer (phone) photos that document the extremely busy life of the Holding family. Extremely. Busy.

Teaching has somehow become MORE time consuming in my 9th year than it was in my 4th. I think it's a situation where the more you know, the harder you work. Maybe? I'm not sure, but what once was a 9-5 (7:15-3:45) job has become that plus 30 minutes in the evening answering emails, plus an hour or so after the girls go to bed most nights going through papers or lesson plans. Compared to most careers I know an extra 2 hours in the evening isn't much. Add it to 2 busy girls with activities (both take dance and ice skating, plus Lulu plays basketball), parents who are runners (I'm within 8 miles of hitting 100 miles for the past month!), a dog that sheds, a house that needs to be cleaned weekly (rude!), and general life chores - whew - and you get a neglected blog.

But I'm here with a small ray of hope: I give you the latest (photo) update.
Your Welcome.

We've played (A LOT of) dress up. Despite the abundance of costumes that include sequins, feathers, and general fluffiness neither Holding girl found one amidst the heap that would do for Halloween this year. Stay tuned.

We Ice Bucket Challenged. Rather, I should say Lexi, Emma, and I Ice Bucket Challenged. Paul declined based on the principle that this was adult chain mail. I'd call him a wet blanket but he was the only one who stayed dry.

SO MANY car meltdowns have been had. Emma is hitting 3 1/2 with a vengeance.
Prayer for my survival.
Pray for her teacher and her babysitter.
Pray especially hard for Lexi, who is Emma's victim of choice when she decides to have a meltdown.

 EJ loves ribs.
Not surprised.

I love days when they both fall asleep in the car. On those magical days I turn off "Frozen" (I'm pretty ready to LET IT GO away for a while) and just enjoy the quiet.

When we took Emma to the dentist in July they discovered a tooth that had never formed enamel (possibly from all the fevers/ear infections she had that first year of life). Part of the tooth has a cavity and we set an appointment to have it filled and get some sealant on that tooth. Paul pulled the short straw and took her to the appointment. I had my phone in hand waiting for an SOS text and sure enough it came 20 minutes in. Everything went fine until they numbed her and told her she had to wait 15 minutes. Emma doesn't wait. She GOES. And she went straight into a fit. By the time I arrived, she was numb but unhappy, standing on the hygienist's chair with her arms folded reciting, "Nope, nope, nope."

We will be using full anesthesia at the next appointment.

Sometimes they get along. Sometimes Emma doesn't wear pants.

Here's our Big Guy - running to kill at the Johnston's Half Marathon in September!

Emma J has dance class with her girl, Gracie!

To be honest, this Masquerade game kind of creeped me out.

What REALLY creeped me out was the return of El Senor, also known as Old Man Possum, also known as the probably rabid animal that stalks our back fence nocturnally. Paul went all SEK when he spotted the return of this guy ("We got us a possum"). I don't know if my 'hairspray it until it dies' method of extermination I use on spiders will have the same effect on a mammal. Wikipedia tells me they only live 2-4 years so biology has my back here, El Senor. #possumshatehairspray

The lovely lady Lexi is really getting the liquid pride to pour out of me lately.
Tears, people.
Liquid pride means tears (if you watched the episode of My Little Pony where Twilight Sparkle becomes a princess you would already know that, though).
Her writing and reading has really improved.
She is reading books on her own and has almost 20 AR points.

Here she is after 1st grade Nursery Rhyme Time. She stood at the microphone, all alone on that big stage, and recited her rhyme perfectly. A little nervously but perfectly. She's growing up. *sniffs*

First Day of School 2014!

Well Back to School happened this week. Notably different than past years because little Miss Emma got to join in the fun!

Emma is going to Preschool 2 afternoons a week and she has been excited about this day for months! If you asked her at any point this summer if she was going to go to preschool, she would lift up her dress and point to her panties and say, "I'm wearing panties now, not diapers. I get to go to SCHOOL!" Wow. I know. Just wow.

Daddy brought Emma up to school (that's right . . . her preschool is at Magdalen. I can spy on her whenever I want!) Thursday afternoon and she skipped and jumped her way into the building.

She did not want any help or even to have her hand held on the way down to the room. Someone thinks she is a big girl.

One we made it to her classroom, she found her little nametag and would not let Mommy or Daddy help her put her things away.

She was doing so well - she was excited about the play-doh her teacher had waiting for her and saying hi to everyone.  Things started to go downhill when the teacher asked everyone to head to the carpet for a story. A couple of kiddos were starting to cry because they realized their parents were going to leave. This is normal. They are only 3 &4. However, Emma interpreted this as meaning the other kids must know something she didn't . . . Why are they crying? What is going to happen? Maybe I should be crying, too?

And during the story, she kept getting up to come back to us and give hugs and kisses.
When it was time to say goodbye she reached Full Alert Mode. The other kids who had been crying were now wailing and it just had her spooked. The teacher had to hold her while Paul and I made a quick dash for the hallway.

I peaked in only once (Once! Aren't you so proud of me?), I also had some pictures sent to me from another teacher when the kiddos were outside her room.

When Em bounced back down to my classroom at the end of the day, she was so happy! She loved her first day, her teacher, her uniform. Loved it all. And I sighed - I was so happy for her, but a little sad that she didn't need me to help her.

We celebrated Emma's first day of Preschool, Lexi's first full day of 1st grade, and Mommy's first full day (with no break - 8 1/2 hours straight!) the best way we know how - Sonic drinks after school!

These pictures were taken about 4 minutes apart.

Emma slept the whole way home and for over an hour on the couch.
But she's ready to go back. I'm not sure how to tell her she only goes to school 2 afternoons a week.

Lexi's First Day of 1st Grade

Lexi had mixed feelings about starting 1st grade. She was excited because she got the teacher she wanted and her friends in her class. She was nervous about missing her Kindergarten teacher and she thought she wasn't a good enough reader to be in 1st grade.

*She reads well, considering she is only 6. She just has a hard time with phonics and when some of the other kids read better/faster than her, she takes it really personally.  :(

She said she was "Nerv-a-cited" (nervous and excited).
I think that is a fantastic way to describe how we all feel on the first day of school.

She's still worried about getting in trouble for talking (that's a real struggle for her), but otherwise the report back was good - she likes her teacher, likes being with her friends, and getting to see Mommy during school Mass.

Lexi's Amazing Day

My partner teacher and sweet friend Lauren got married this past weekend. Lexi had the honor and privilege of getting to be her flower girl. Lexi and Lauren have a sweet and touching relationship. For the past two years, Lauren was one of Lexi's first stops every morning when we got to school - she loves Lauren so much and we will all miss her dearly next year!
Lauren was a beautiful bride and being a part of her special day was a joy!

  Lexi's fabulous up-do!

Her beautiful dress - she loved it so so much!

Cousin Chloe joined us for the day - what an awesome reception! They had a great time dancing!

All tuckered out - a long, but wonderful day!

Congratulations, again! Beautiful bride, beautiful day!

Fearless Emma

I have always pretty much known that my two children are not cut from the same cloth. Not even from the same fabric family tree. Never was this more evident than this summer.

Emma LOVES the water - remember she is a "little fish"!

She loves to jump in, at any depth, and tries to swim or explore underwater. She loves going down slides and does so extremely quickly. Many parents at swim lessons took to calling her "The Cannonball" and her teacher remarked that most of the older children cannot navigate the slide with the total reckless abandon that my 3 year old exhibits.

So Emma J earned a new nickname this year: Fearless Emma.
And it really, really sums her up.
She is not afraid of ANYTHING - heights, depths, water, or speed.

Heaven help us all.

4th of July

We spent four days in Columbus with Paul's parents. Emma slept almost not at all - unless someone was in the bed with her. This means Paul and I were functioning on half sleep. But, seriously, at this point - that is our lives. Emma does not sleep all night ever. Not even for America's birthday.

The girls had fun exploring the farm and watching fireworks with their cousins (and catching farm critters).

Emma also had a chance to hone her photography skills while we were at a restaurant in Joplin.

Lexi's 6th Birthday

Only about a month late on this, and I would like to say it is because I am in complete and total denial that I have a child who is SIX! How, how, how did that happen? She was a tiny baby just a few moments ago and NOW I have this beautiful, long haired princess who reads to me (reluctantly) and can answer math questions all day.

Lexi-Lu's 6th birthday was mostly a day spent with mom and dad. I'm a little selfish; I don't want to give up my full day with her yet in exchange for a couple hours of a chaotic friend party. I like this day too much to let go of it yet.

Emma got to hang with my parents for the day and Lexi picked the activities. Since her birthday was on a Sunday, we started with church.

Jesus would be ok with car selfies in a church parking lot.

We followed this up with lunch at out favorite neighborhood pizza restaurant. Lexi wore her birthday tiara and lots of servers stopped by to ask if she was the Birthday Princess.

We spent about 97 minutes at Toys R' Us while she picked out items to spend with her giftcard from her Grandma and Grandpa. She combed over that store for what felt like days looking for her perfect treasures. She eventually settled on an Ariel water toy, Frozen nail polish, and a tea set that she could actually use with water.

Per her request, we went to the pool next. She spent an entire hour working up the courage to get off the steps. She refused to go under water. Oh Diva, what will we do with you?

At dinner time, my parents came over (with Emma) and we had dinner, cake, and let Lexi open her presents (real ice skates, new books, Barbies, new dresses, painting books, and hair accessories).

Daddy set up the splash pool outside and the girls had a BLAST sliding down the slide into it. We ended the night with cupcakes on the patio.

Em - sticking her landing, just like Momma taught her!

It is my tradition to let her stay up "late" until 8:30 - the time she was born. We toasted with sparkling blueberry juice. Cheers!
